Ellin, I applaud your stance against wrongdoing, your ability to skillfully articulate what many, including me, believe, your ability to bring to light how those “in power” continue to exploit the conditions constituents find themselves in, and your genuine ability to provoke my thoughtful and timely self-reflection. Senator Britt needs to come out of her kitchen (literally). Thank you!
I’m so sorry for what you went through, as well as the later insult inflicted by politicians whose goal iin these charades s simply to harm immigrants. I was personally stunned when Britt invoked the sex trafficking victim, who she would have, under any other circumstance, called an “illegal” when she came here to escape the cartels. She would happily impugn her right alongside Mr. Ortega if the situation fit. As an immigration attorney, I know all too well the attacks individuals without status in the U.S. endure. But to do so while parading out victims without even acknowledging the pain of the families left behind is particularly grotesque. Thank you for speaking up.
Ellin, thank you for offering a both sobering and unique perspective on the situation. When context is added, we serve a greater purpose: to get closer to a more holistic experience. I thank you for sharing and grieve for the loss you suffered.
I can't imagine your pain. I admire your principles. We've interacted on Facebook (we didn't agree), but I was respectful to you and you were respectful to me. You were articulate and polite in your response, I'm not sure I could muster the same. You have my heartfelt sympathy for your loss.
This is the right, humane and decent stance to have toward immigration and immigrants in general, not those scapegoating, horrid views about how they are all here to steal your jobs and "destabilize the job market" and are mostly criminals out to get good Americans. As if US citizens did not commit murder. As if American nationals do not engage in crime. What is the point of even bringing up the death of this person at the hand of an "illegal" if for no other reason than to exploit it in order to continue to blame, scapegoat and vilify immigrants and asylum seekers to ultimately distract from the real criminals in this country - all of whom, last I checked, are US citizens. And rich. And wealthy. And powerful.
I have always admired Ellin's ability to not conflate the issues, to not allow the death of her child, which as I understand is the greatest pain in the world, turn her into a hateful person advocating against immigrants. I think it speaks to her character and integrity that she is able to humanize the person who killed her daughter and place his actions within a context, which is a desperate person running for his life from almost certain death at the hands of police - a death he encountered later on anyway. But in many ways he was a victim too. And the real perpetrators are walking free.
I have said it before and I will say it again, immigrants are not the problem. They are not why you don't have healthcare, why you have crappy wages, no social safety net, poisoned water and pay taxes to essentially subsidize your own oppression. Ask yourself who benefits from vilifying immigrants and refugees. It is not poor people. Everytime you concede to anti-immigrant voices and say they have a point, anytime you argue that a person whose number one priority is "border security" has a point, anytime you give credence to this type of talk, including applauding Ron De Santis' move to ship refugees to Martha's Vineyard as "genius" and "hilarious", you contribute to the kind of anti immigrant hatred and hysteria that Ellin is calling out here.
In the end, I would rather my taxes go toward feeding and housing people regardless of citizenship status, than bombing them or tax cuts for billionaires, which is all this anti immigrant rhetoric is about. The rich and powerful who are behind all the problems in this country are exploiting peoples' anger about their lives and redirecting it to some of the most powerless people in the world because as long as people are busy blaming immigrants and the poor for their problems, they won't be looking to the real criminals. If you hate on immigrants, if you think they are a problem, then you are being a useful idiot for the Establishment. And you are no better than the people who wrote that book about poor rural folks being a danger to America.
you might be right about illegal aliens not being the problem - brain dead virtue signaling shitlibs that are the bigger problem. now it's time, it's time for both of you that support criminal activity to open your own homes to the illegal aliens, support 5-8, maybe 10-12 criminals at a time. And no matter how much shitlib doublespeak you use, they are "criminals" first, for entering the US illegally. you can not talk or gaslight around this single fact. If one of your new roommates/dependents kills you, rapes you, robs you, injures you or your family, any of the above, just put another sign in your yard and that should help. please let us all know how your new housemates work out.

Thanks so much, Charles. I agree: she needs to get out of her kitchen LOL.

Thank you for taking on the hard work of representing those without status. A hard but righteous job.

And, as always, fire these people. Yesterday.
Thank you so much, Ellin.

Thanks so much. I appreciate your support and understanding of the point I am trying to make so much.
